As part of the Philippine Coast Guard Auxiliary’s endeavor to assist and equip coastal villages, the 125th Auxilary Squadron, under the directive of the CGAD NCR-CL command, has taken steps to recruit, retain and train prospective auxiliarists from coastal villages, particularly in Muntinlupa City.
Early this month, the Squadron Community Relations Team went to visit Barangay Tunasan in Muntinlupa City for an initial assessment of the area and identify the strengths and weaknesses of the community.
Mr. Al Cosio, head of the Environmental Sanitation Department of Muntinlupa City, made it known to 125th that their locale is taking every opportunity to equip their people to become self-reliant, hence, extending their full support to the said PCGA project.
What’s more, Barangay Tunasan has the necessary venue and facilities that can be utilized by PCGA to conduct trainings for the village auxiliarists.
“Their emergency response team takes interest and wishes to get involved in any training and activities our squadron will conduct,” says LTJG Ma. Cristina Dumlao in her report.
According to its website, erosion and siltation is taking place in Muntinlupa at the rate of about one tone per annum. The physical features of its coastal margin along with the progressive urbanization in the area increase the frequency and intensity of flooding.
The city from time to time experiences a moderate to severe flooding when the water level of the lake almost reached the national road. Barangays within the municipality adjacent to the shoreline got affected.
It is for these instances that disaster preparedness management is deemed necessary since the said coastal community is situated over a fault line, therefore, increasing the chances of flooding.
Despite having the facilities and equipment, Mr. Cosio informed 125th that their city lacks trainers. Should there be an available instructor, Muntinlupa can lend their sports complex in Tunasan, three rubber boats for boat handling training and outdoor facilities such rappel and obstacle courses.
As proposed by the Squadron, activities in line for Barangay Tunasan to address its necessities are; basic Coast Guard Auxiliary orientation, maritime search and rescue as per the PCGA Manual, Safety of Life and Property at Sea (SOLAS) and boat handling. The community auxiliarists are also expected to participate in the World Coastal Clean-up and other livelihood and coastal projects that would help PCGA in its mission.
